Confirming Our Focus
We referenced several sources of data as a starting point to frame our conversations around belonging and connectedness. The information helps us to reflect, ask questions, and engage in an inquiry process to support our students.
From our data, we can see there is room to grow when it comes to student feelings of happiness, safety, and confidence, as reported by our students. Results of our school surveys, MDI, and EDI all support our work in this area.
Our staff sees the next steps as continuing with the classroom-based strategies and expanding our school-wide focus to improve the sense of belonging and connectedness among our students.
Student Survey
Our student survey focused on three questions with the following results:
Do you feel happy at school?
Do you feel safe at school?
Do you feel confident at school?
Staff Survey
The staff survey showed that many staff members noted improvements in student interactions, such as more students playing together, increased engagement, and students using more emotion words, and most agreed that fostering connections and belonging remains a need.
Many feel that work in the classrooms is going well, and we should increase the number of school-wide activities and initiatives to encourage use of common language, to increase visibility of our efforts to document and share positive student behaviour and accomplishments, to address online safety and literacy, especially for intermediate students, and seek out professional development opportunities.
